(2021) Zeno van den Broek + Robin Koek – Raumklang
During a week long residency at The Grey Space Zeno van den Broek and Robin Koek worked on their project ‘Raumklang’, before presenting a try-out version of the installation as part of our public program A Three Fold.
Raumklang creates a location-specific sound architecture, affected and unveiled by multiple visitors simultaneously. The augmented layer fully engages with the potential of sound, acoustics and interaction, deepening relationships with the spaces we and other lifeforms inhabit. The work is the result of a long-term artistic research trajectory which centralises the potential of sound, acoustics and interaction in order to move beyond the visual monopoly of architectural experience. The installation fosters a mutual cognitive extension, understanding the spaces surrounding us towards a culture of sentient auditory spatial awareness, enabling a new pathway to individual and collective experiencing of physical architectures and locations based on hyper-local sonic augmentation.

Zeno van den Broek is a composer and artist who explores the intricate relationship between humans and technology. Through his audiovisual creations, he delves into how our interactions with fabricated environments shape our experiences. Van den Broek’s works challenge the conventional understanding of how we perceive and engage with technology-infused spaces. His intention is to generate moments of disruption, friction, and potential, awakening our sense of agency and urging us to break free from our routine engagement with technology. In doing so, he invites visitors to become active participants in his art, playing an integral role in its realization and leaving a lasting impact.
Robin Koek is an enterprising sound artist who aspires to nurture a new cognitive understanding of the world surrounding us mediated through art and education. His work reflects on the environment integrating field recordings and site-specificity in composition and installation practice, researching the spatial nature of sound in both the physical and virtual realm. He constructs immersive experiences at the intersections of these worlds merging analog, digital and acoustic phenomena. These augmented realities are sculpted out of code, sensing devices and media projections developed in interdisciplinary teams. These realities can be experienced as dynamic environments in which sensory feedback to the interactor is an essential component. His recent works explore a transhumanist approach in which technology plays an important role to explore new forms of interspecies communication and mutual understanding fostering new art ecologies.
The public program A Three Fold consisted of three parts: a culinary experience, a micro exhibition and a music and performance program. The audience moved through different spaces during the course of the multisensory event.
Alongside the work of Zeno van den Broek + Robin Koek, this hybrid edition was composed of an extensive program with contributions by Leanne Wijnsma, , Sebastien Robert + Mark IJzerman, Maika Garnica + Senne Claes and DJ fascia lata.
Raumklang is co-produced by V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media and supported by STEIM and the Creative Industries Fund NL.
