As part of his Open Space residency, and in the context of his ongoing research into tools, Constant Dullaart brings together a collection of guest for the hybrid broadcast ‘Studio Dull: The Tool – Law, Music, Dictatorship’.
What gives different forms of tools their agency and cultural identity? How are tools colored by the cultures of those that create them? This evening’s lineup of presentations and artistic interventions spark thoughts on consequences of the tool as a medium.
- 20.00–22.00 Talks, presentations, performances and interviews with Paulien Oltheten, Gabi van Driem, Aaron Moulton, Koen Nutters, and Constant Dullaart.
- 22.00–02.00 Music program curated by Ginkosynthese.
Artist Paulien Oltheten discusses her use of Constant Dullaart’s own tool, the DullTech player. Amsterdam based lawyer Gabi van Driem brings the tool into the context of law, while curator Aaron Moulton presents his short film ‘Suzy’ and sheds light on how a tool can then become political. A musical interlude will be performed on three physical locations, brought together in a tool, the online platform common.garden by musician and composer Koen Nutters.
The evenings continues in our basement. Non other than musician and designer of electronic musical instruments, Jan Willem Hagenbeek from Ginkosynthese, is responsible for the modular music program.
The Grey Space opens at 17.00.

From September 9th until December 18th, artist Constant Dullaart is the Open Space resident at The Grey Space. Dullaart initiates new work and exchanges knowledge around his artistic research into the authorship hidden in protocols, systems, and tools. For this, part of The Grey Space will be transformed into the broadcasting station Studio Dull. The radio broadcasts are prepared by the editorial team, consisting of Ruby Lee (artist), Marijke Cobbenhagen (artistic lead of The Grey Space), and Constant Dullaart.
