Piotr Urbaniec is a visual and performance artist based in Amsterdam. His current research centers on waves, understood both as water glitches and optical disturbances across gridded surfaces.

The project he further develops at The Grey Space reflects on the futile human attempt to control nature –especially the weather– while ultimately remaining vulnerable to its unpredictable, atmospheric forces. He continues his exploration of the poetic and scientific links between visual perception and weather. He focuses on the aqueous –what flows from our eyes or drifts across our field of vision– mirroring the hyper-body of weather that surrounds us. Together with musician Mark Nieuwenhuis, he will animate the space with sound, movement, and fragile materials, resonating into a living landscape. The work unfolds as a time-based performance and an autonomous installation, extending the experience before and after the live performance.

Bau AIR The Grey Space

Bau and The Grey Space collaborate once a year in a curated residency. The organizations invite an eye-catching maker who moves at the interface of performance and visual art, This resident will have the ability to work in both Amsterdam and The Hague and relate to the arts field and audience there.

Both work periods conclude with a presentation to share how the research is developing. Urbaniec presented at the Bau studio on June 20, 2025.

This residency has been sponsored by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
