Every tool is created for a specific kind of work. But what if the tool is the work itself? BARTALK and The Grey Space in The Middle are partnering up to address this question as part of Constant Dullaart’s residency at The Grey Space.
In this edition of BARTALK, four tool makers, hackers, and users are invited to share their views on the questions like: What intentions and belief systems are built into a tool, and how does it shape the world around it? What are the political and design considerations in inventing a new tool? And how does one broaden the accessibility of a tool?
The Grey Space opens at 15.30.
The event starts at 16.00.
Tickets are €5.
Haider Mukhit (KZ/NL) is a graphic designer with a background in literature and linguistics. He is currently working on a project called ‘kaz.type 1.0’, which traces the lineage of different scripts used for Kazakh: from Turkish to Arabic, to Latin, Cyrillic, and now back to Latin again, with a particular focus on their uses in Kazakh typography. He will be talking about the written word as a tool and the political and cultural considerations of transitioning between different scripts and the resulting collision in font styles.
Xiomara Virdó is a multidisciplinary artist and performer. She is currently studying at the Large Glass Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and was originally trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance. She uses performance, sculpture, video, installations, and sound to interrogate what is seen as a ‘body’ and what isn’t, how bodies are experienced, and how different embodied experiences inform our perception of reality.
BARTALK is a lecture/performance/storytelling series that takes place in different bars in The Hague. Each public BARTALK event is themed and consists of four 15-minute presentations by guests from different backgrounds. These presentations can take any form, such as performances, speculative lectures, and demonstrations, as long as no PowerPoints are involved.
Ultimately, BARTALK is a model of knowledge-sharing as community-building.
Combine your visit to The Grey Space with the subsequent connected Dinner Session and enjoy delicious food cooked by chefs LI Yuchen & Zoé Saraswati whilst listening to pleasant tunes by Koiri (Rachwill Breidel).
Artist Constant Dullaart is developing a new work entitled Studio Dull as part of his three-month Open Space residency at The Grey Space. Like no other, Constant Dullaart plays with the notion of what a medium is and searches for the human origins of technological phenomena and structures. With his often political approach, he makes us reconsider what we as users and consumers have become blind to. Studio Dull focuses on the authorship that is hidden in tools in the form of a hybrid broadcasting station.
