In the third edition of our open-call-based program Filling the Void, Madeline Swainhart takes us on a search for an image of what family can look like outside of the binary.

'Grammy's Praying For Me – If a home is where we become. What happens when we don’t fit?'

The installation ‘Grammy’s Praying For Me – If a home is where we become. What happens when we don’t fit?’ touches on the concepts of belonging, gender identity and family. Photography, moving image, written and spoken word the will be accompanied by live improvisational poetry by Filomena. Together the artists will create an environment in which one can feel home and welcomed.

At 19.00 a reading by Madeline Swainhart will be followed up by Filomena’s improvisational poetry writing.

Madeline Swainhart
Madeline Swainhart’s (they/she) work is an ode to young Maddie, who couldn’t see any caring characters who looked like them. Their practice revolves around research and construction, where they wonder what family can look like outside the binary, considering the question ‘Can we all mother?’.  The tension between found footage and performance intends to emphasizes the expectation of gender roles within domesticity.
