Filling the Void: Lema Ahmadi
The next edition of Filling the Void is here and features the latest work of artist and maker Lema Ahmadi. With an intuitive approach to making, Lema creates larger than life sculptures that gives her material new life and allows it to tell new stories.
“For Those That Wish To Exist” will populate The Grey Space with mythological beings and take the viewer on a journey that questions life, death, and sacrifice. The presentation will be Lema’s farewell exhibition to the city before she starts a new chapter in Berlin. So make sure not to miss your last chance to visit her work.
The installation is a diorama of objects and sculptures inspired by sacred and mythological tales. In her work, she gives new life to materials such as wood, metal, styrofoam, plaster, goat horns, a goat’s skull, textiles, spray paint, rabbit fur, human teeth, a taxidermy fox, and lacquer paint. With this, Lema creates an environment where the combination of natural and synthetic materials coexist and grow together.
Fertile soil is given to her multi-layered storytelling in which the viewer is invited to provide their own interpretation of what is seen. Lema wanted to create imagery that one cannot give a name to, but can relate to on a deeper unconscious level. Everyone has a personal connection to the symbols presented in this scenery, where the relations between the objects and space build their own mythological language.
Born 1993, in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, Lema Ahmadi is a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Arts – Fine Arts department – and is currently based in The Hague. In her practice, Lema creates intuitively and pays close attention to the process by keeping a constant dialogue with the materials she uses. This practice allows her unconsciousness to materialise the various symbolic narratives that come to existence in her work.
Filling the Void is developed by The Grey Space to help stimulate The Hague’s environment for young creatives and emerging artists by offering a platform for short presentations and is curated by Yannik Güldner.
