default #20

Thu 23 January
19.30–23.30
€12,50–€15,00

Hosted by default den haag

For default#20, we are thrilled to host three key figures from Beijing’s experimental music scene: Sun Yizhou, Zhu Wenbo, and Zhao Cong. Joining them this night is The Hague-based band Able Noise.

Sun Yizhou, Zhu Wenbo and Zhao Cong have all brought forward divergent ‘music unlike music’ ideas to the post-2000 eai discourse, including performances and compositions which defy easy categorisation and approach possible boundaries of music or non-music today. They have initiated such labels as ‘Zoomin’ Night’ (Zhu Wenbo), ‘Aloe Records’ (Sun Yizhou) as well as affiliated concert programs.
Program

As part of their first European tour, they will perform at default in various formations. Zhao Cong creates improvised music using amplified everyday objects, including balloons, to produce unexpected sounds. Zhu Wenbo works across electroacoustic music, tape music, improvisation, and more. Sun Yizhou uses electronic devices, objects, and feedback systems, playing “mis-operated appliances” in real-time, embracing contradiction and uncertainty.

Rounding out the lineup is Able Noise, a duo based between The Hague and Athens. They’ll present an unconventional electro-acoustic live show, combining baritone guitar, drums, and voice with a feedback system that includes bouzouki and portable playback devices.

The event includes a free conversation and session with Sun Yizhou, Zhu Wenbo, and Zhao Cong at the Central Library the next day.
